One mother was so traumatized by her first pregnancy that she says she “literally developed a phobia” and had her fallopian tubes removed at the age of 24.
Belle Mourraille, now 28, was bedridden for months and lost 30kg during her pregnancy, and after thinking she would die in childbirth, she decided to undergo a salpingectomy to rule out giving birth another child.
“I decided quickly after I found out I was pregnant that I didn’t want to be involved with a man that way,” said the Napa, Calif., resident.
“My pregnancy and birth were horrible to the point where I literally had a phobia of either finding out I was pregnant, being pregnant or giving birth.
“I would have constant nightmares about any of those things happening and I would wake up traumatized and terrified.”
The pregnancy itself was no picnic, and she says she actually lost a lot of weight — although according to the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, it’s recommended that a woman at a healthy pre-pregnancy weight gain 25 to 35 pounds.
Even obese women who have a BMI of 30 or more are recommended to gain 11 to 20 kilograms.
“During the pregnancy, I was bedridden all the time. “I lost 30 pounds and all I could eat was egg waffles, which sounds great, but they literally have no nutritional benefit and I felt like absolute s–t,” Belle said.
After giving birth to her baby, she underwent a salpingectomy, or surgery to remove the fallopian tube.
“I had my tubes removed at 24,” she said, adding that she knows she will never be able to have children again.
“My birth was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I literally thought I was going to die. “The whole time, I just begged the doctors and nurses to please help me and save my life,” she said.
For her, hormonal birth control was not an option.
“Since I started birth control at 13, I feel like I’ve never been the same. No matter what form of birth control I use, I gain weight, my periods are terrible, my hormones are out of whack,” she said.
“In my personal opinion, I think birth control is poisonous.”
Now, the mother of one feels her best after going off birth control completely and her fear of pregnancy has since vanished.
